Press Release – 26th January 2015

The Living Wage Foundation, in partnership with Poverty Alliance, is pleased to announce that Lithium Systems, has today, 26th January 2015, been accredited as a Living Wage employer.

The Living Wage commitment will see everyone working at Lithium Systems, regardless of whether they are permanent employees or third-party contractors and suppliers; receive a minimum hourly wage of £7.85 – significantly higher than the national minimum wage of £6.50.

The Living Wage is an hourly rate set independently and updated annually. The Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost of living using the ‘Minimum Income Standard’ for the UK. Decisions about what to include in this standard are set by the public; it is a social consensus about what people need to make ends meet.

Employers choose to pay the Living Wage on a voluntary basis. The Living Wage enjoys cross party support, in both the Scottish and Westminster parliaments.

Living Wage Foundation Director, Rhys Moore said: “We are delighted to welcome Lithium Systems to the Living Wage movement as an accredited employer.

“The best employers are voluntarily signing up to pay the Living Wage now. The Living Wage is a robust calculation that reflects the real cost of living, rewarding a hard day’s work with a fair day’s pay.

“We have accredited over 1,000 leading employers, including Lithium Systems, ranging from independent printers, hairdressers and breweries, to well-known companies such as Nationwide, Aviva and SSE. These businesses recognise that clinging to the national minimum wage is not good for business. Customers expect better than that. ”

Press Release – 2nd March 2014

LITHIUM Systems Ltd has been at the top of its game for ten years providing Information Technology services and support to small businesses throughout the UK.

The Alloa based business is now recruiting two additional engineers after recently expanding into new premises. “We’ve weathered the downturn quite well” said Stephen Franklyn, co-owner of Lithium Systems. “As our client list has recently grown it’s now time to ramp up our staff. We provide IT services to companies that don’t have their own in-house support.”

“We can offer huge cost reductions based on our engineers only being called upon when problems arise. Our engineers are fully experienced and flexible depending on a client’s individual requirements. We’re Microsoft small business server specialists and take responsibility for all aspects of computer systems as well as supplying hardware and design networks.”

The business partnership of Stephen Franklyn and George Aitkenhead began in October 2003 when they opened Lithium Systems with one client. Stephen is responsible for business development and George oversees technical matters. Both men have engineering backgrounds, were next-door-neighbours, and later colleagues when they both worked for Digital Equipment Corporation in South Queensferry.

“I left DEC before it was taken over by Motorola and spent nine years working with IBM products. I was also assisting local small businesses with IT issues. When George was made redundant following the closure of Motorola we decided to work for ourselves. We approached Business Gateway Clackmannanshire who helped us with start-up grants and training courses. We have a good relationship with Business Gateway having taken them on as a client in the early years and we’ve just returned to them for more support.” said Stephen.

Alison Davidson from Business Gateway Clackmannanshire said, “This is a very successful local business with a national client base. We have been pleased to support Lithium Systems with grant funding and start-up training courses and by providing advice on a business plan in their early days. More recently they have attended courses on social media, manual handling and, of course, recruitment as they have taken on new staff.”

Lithium prides itself in the relationships formed with some of the world’s leading IT suppliers such as Intel, Dell & Microsoft. This allows them to offer the best possible solution from the bewildering array of services on offer: from in-house server installation to a cloud-based collaborative solution and everything in-between. Their new headquarters in Alloa is geographically significant as they can despatch an engineer and be in Glasgow, Edinburgh or Perth in around 30 minutes, an essential element of their fast, effective support service.

“We’re very efficient and provide a personal touch. When customers contact us they invariably get straight through to an engineer. Running your own business means you are taking control of your own destiny.”

“You work as hard as you need to and the rewards are customer satisfaction, word of mouth referrals, and seeing the results at the end of year. We have a great team of engineers and administration staff who have worked hard to build a strong customer base. We aim to double our annual turnover to £1.2 million and we’re looking forward to the next ten years.” said Stephen.
